A month to celebrate the outdoors

DAILY NEWS STAFF REPORT

BRECKENRIDGE ” It’s July, get out and take a walk through a park.

Since 1985, the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) has designated the month of July as Recreation and Parks Month.

Recreation facilities and parks across the country annually use July to celebrate the kick off of summer programming as well as a time to pull their communities together to volunteer, get involved in outdoor activities and advocate for parks and recreation.

Research shows that 75 percent of Americans live within two miles of a public park or recreation facility. And more than three-fourths of the population takes advantage of their local parks and recreation facilities. This amounts to a staggering 192 million people visiting parks annually.

As part of this year’s celebration, The Town of Breckenridge is planning free activities to keep the community active and involved including three themed activity days: Fitness Fun Day, July 13; Super Seniors Day, July 21; and a 5th Anniversary Celebration at the Stephen C. West Ice Arena, July 23.

July event schedules will be available at the Stephen C. West Ice Arena and the Breckenridge Recreation Center.

“We are excited to recognize our local Recreation Department for the role we play in our community,” said Jill Wait, Recreation Director for the Town of Breckenridge. “We live in a setting that lends itself to exploring the natural environment and to playing and staying fit.”
