A well-written rebuttal

I would like to compliment R. Glenn Vawter for his “Other Voices” column titled “The real truth about Yucca Mountain.” His rebuttal to the misleading column by Justin J. MacCarthy is very accurate and to the point. I am an earth scientist who worked 40 years in the environmental field specializing in ground water contamination. I have not only visited Yucca Mountain, I have also worked at a large number of radioactive waste disposal sites around the country. I am also an environmentalist, but we have to accept practical solutions to existing problems.

This country will probably need to expand our use of nuclear power and we cannot continue to store depleted fuel rods in pools at existing reactors. Billions of dollars of taxpayer’s money has been spent to select the safest site for long-term storage of high-level radioactive waste and Yucca Mountain is the best selection.
