Abigail Kellerman: Hasan for the forests

Abigail Kellerman
East Vail

I am voting for Ali Hasan because I believe in his campaign against the federal laws that would allow us to protect and regulate our own national forest areas as well as acquiring more federal funding.

Leaving the decision of how and when to remove these trees up to local officials is an important step towards giving each county the ability to manage and regulate our forests.

In a survey that was done in August 2007, residents were asked to list Vail’s top five issues. Pine-beetle infestation came in #2. The is a major fire hazard that has got to be dealt with. Pine-beetles have and are affecting Vail and the surrounding areas tourism, real estate values, and just the general beauty of the Rocky Mountains.

Pine-beetles are more than just a statewide problem, they have created a large band that reaches from British Columbia, Canada all the way down to Chihuahua, Mexico. I am anxious for Ali Hasan as state representative and Rick Amico as county commissioner to succeed with their war on this pine-beetle infestation.
