Accused cabin bomber heads to trial

BRECKENRIDGE – A man accused of rigging his backcountry cabin with explosives after being evicted pleaded not guilty in District Court Monday and will take his case to a jury.David James Walt, also known as “Buck,” is charged with attempted first-degree murder, attempted first-degree arson and two counts of possession of explosives.Walt, who remains in custody in the Summit County Jail, will appear in court Nov. 17 when attorneys on both sides of the case argue motions before the judge. A jury trial is scheduled for March 17-19.The district attorney’s office filed the charges against Walt after a Jefferson County bomb squad had to be called in by the Summit County Sheriff’s Office to clean out Walt’s cabin. The landlord of Walt’s cabin and a neighbor went to clear out trash and belongings on June 1.Walt had been evicted from the cabin, located on B&B Mine property off County Road 565, in December. In a preliminary hearing in August, the neighbor, Bruce Batten, testified how he and the landlord discovered a tripwire in the driveway attached to a shotgun shell.Inside the cabin, Batten said he unhooked a deep-cycle battery before realizing it and another battery were connected with wires to another explosive device.A potentially lethal surprise was rigged up in one of the cabin rooms – a pound of black powder, three tubes of an ammonium nitrate-fuel oil explosive covered by about 500 9-millimeter bullets.
