Adding lanes never solves congestion in the long run

Why does anyone think that adding lanes to Interstate 70 will solve anything? Has that solution worked anywhere in the U.S.? Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Chicago … it seems they have all tried adding lanes of highway, and they all received the same exciting result – more traffic, more accidents and more pollution. One would think that we possess the ability to learn from others’ mistakes.Adding lanes will not help improve traffic flow, safety or cleanliness. In fact, all of those things will get worse. The only long-term viable solution is mass transit of some sort.
