Whole Foods Market in Frisco is hosting the Feed4More benefit to raise money and awareness for the Family Intercultural Resource Center on Saturday, Nov. 28, from 7–10 p.m. The $10 cover charge includes one free beer from Odell Brewing and live music with The Frisco Funk Collective. There will be a silent auction with Whole Foods gift baskets and gift certificates from local businesses.

Authors at Next Page for Small Business Saturday

The Next Page Books & Nosh is hosting several local authors for Small Business Saturday. Beth Groundwater, Richard Brock, Gail Westwood, Lindsay Eland, Karin Mitchell and MaryAnn Gaug will be at the bookstore throughout the day in shifts between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Next Page is hosting this event as part of Indies First, a national campaign of activities and events in support of independent bookstores, first envisioned by author Sherman Alexie in 2013. It kicks off each November, on Small Business Saturday, when independent bookstores host authors as honorary booksellers throughout the day to help sell books, share recommendations, sign stock, give readings and more. It’s a great opportunity for authors to meet the people who buy their books and let them know what they read as well. During the Winter Walk on Dec. 4, Next Page will be hosting Mark Fox and Johnny Welsh to sign their newly released books.

National Repertory Orchestra joins the Global #GivingTuesday Movement

The National Repertory Orchestra (NRO) has joined #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. Occurring this year on Dec. 1, #GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday to kick-off the holiday giving season and inspire people to collaborate in improving their local communities and to give back in impactful ways to the charities and causes they support.

Last year was the first year the NRO joined #GivingTuesday and it was a great success, helping the organization to continue in its mission of Changing Lives Through Music. During the 2015 summer, the Orchestra brought 88 young musicians from all across the country to Summit County tuition-free. In turn, the Orchestra provided residents and visitors with world-class music, including two free concerts, a children’s concert, and 30 free community outreach events at local schools, hospitals and other public and private venues.

The NRO, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit has been bringing live classical music to Colorado since 1960.

“#GivingTuesday allows supporters to give back to the NRO and inspire others to do the same in their communities by posting stories and photos on social media,” said Kathleen Clabby, NRO patron relations manager, in a statement. “It’s spreading like wildfire and gaining more and more momentum each year. As opposed to the more consumer-driven days of the season, like Black Friday, #GivingTuesday is a day people can feel really good about.”

92Y — a cultural center in New York City that, since 1874, has been bringing people together around its core values of community service and giving back — conceptualized #GivingTuesday as a new way of linking individuals and causes to strengthen communities and encourage giving. Since 2012, online giving on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving has increased more than four-fold, based on findings by Blackbaud and the Indiana University’s Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, produced in partnership with the Case Foundation.

“We have been incredibly inspired by the generosity in time, efforts and ideas that have brought our concept for a worldwide movement into reality,” said Henry Timms, founder of #GivingTuesday and executive director of 92Y. “As we embark on our fourth year of #GivingTuesday, we are encouraged by the early response from partners eager to continue making an impact in this global conversation.”
