Air Force Academy cadet jailed on sexual assault charge

COLORADO SPRINGS ” An Air Force Academy cadet was arrested Monday on suspicion of raping a high school girl who had passed out after a night of drinking at an off-campus party.

Nicholas Martin, 21, a sophomore, was being held on $10,000 bond in the El Paso County jail.

The alleged assault happened during a Sept. 10 party in Fountain outside Colorado Springs. A 17-year-old girl said Martin “got her drunk with Everclear” ” a liquor that is mostly pure grain alcohol ” and then took her to an upstairs bedroom after she began losing consciousness, deputy police chief Mike Barnett said.

The girl told police that she passed out and awoke briefly to find Martin on top of her.

There were about 20 to 30 people at the party, including seven to nine cadets. Air Force Academy officials said one of the cadets reported the alleged assault to the school.

The girl also reported it to Fountain police.

A sexual assault scandal shook the academy two years ago when female cadets said commanders punished them when they report assaults. The Air Force replace the academy’s top commanders and put new policies in place.
