Alcohol, pain meds cause of death at Silverthorne hotel

SILVERTHORNE – A fatal mixture of alcohol and pain medication killed a Fort Collins man earlier this month in a Silverthorne hotel, according to Summit County Coroner Joanne Richardson.Orion Wellman, 29, was found deceased in his room at La Quinta Inn in Silverthorne on Feb. 17. He had been on an overnight ski trip with friends.Richardson said Wellman’s blood-alcohol level was three times the normal amount and the toxicology report also showed Darvon, which is a prescription pain medication that can be lethal when mixed with alcohol. There were no signs that Wellman was suicidal or that foul play was involved with his death, Richardson said. She said Wellman and his friends had been out drinking the night before his death, but Wellman only drank a small amount at that time and continued to drink in his room afterward.
