Ali Hasan: Vote Irvine for fiscal responsibility

Ali Hasan
Beaver Creek

To the voters of House District 56: One of the greatest honors of my life was running for HD56 in 2008. I was proud to carry 47 percent of the vote, while championing the issues of monorailing I-70 and bringing more local control to our forests.

With that said, I am very proud of Debra Irvine and I endorse her for HD56. Historically, as the chair of the Summit County Republicans, Debra has a long history of activism within our great district – but more importantly, Debra brings something to the table that few rookie candidates can claim – bipartisanship!

Debra, in her years as the Summit GOP Chair, has taken special care to work with Democrats in making her community better. The best example of such spirit can be found in the Summit Daily, where on Oct. 16, 2008, Debra penned a letter with Sandy Briggs, Chair of the Summit County Democrats, in addressing the issue of Summit Measure 1A. In addition, Debra has knocked on thousands of doors throughout Lake County and Eagle County, demonstrating that she’s a leader who knows all of us.

Christine Scanlan is a wonderful leader and I was proud to run against her in 2008. However, I do believe our state needs to guarantee that the voters have a say in budgetary issues. In this last session, we saw the Democrats of Colorado take a strong hand towards “fees,” supporting bills that would create quasi-ways of increasing taxes on everything from candy to Internet purchases – and as a fiscal conservative who celebrates the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights, I don’t deny that our state sometimes needs money – I just ask that our good leaders ask for permission before raising our taxes or “fees.”

For this reason of fiscal conservatism, I ask that you vote for Debra Irvine. Of last note, Debra is like a mother to me, a friend who has really become family over these last three years – you have my word – Debra will be a phenomenal Representative.
