Alleged embezzlement case delayed

BRECKENRIDGE – The sheer profusion of evidentiary documents in the case of a former motel manager accused of embezzling is delaying the proceedings against her.

Lawyers for the district attorney’s office and defendant appeared Thursday before District Court Judge Terry Ruckriegle for a status conference on the case.

Ruckriegle ordered the district attorney’s office to expedite the copying of documents to provide the defense with the purported evidence in the case of Megan Pierson.

Pierson, 34, of Summit Cove, faces felony theft charges for allegedly stealing during her employment at the Super 8 Motel in Dillon.

Police arrested Pierson Christmas Eve following a five-month investigation of the motel’s books. Police accuse Pierson of using at least 11 different methods to skim as much as $300,000 from motel operations while she was manager.

Prosecutor Rachel Fresquez told the judge Thursday that documents filling up three to five large boxes, including audits, computer reports and lodging registration forms, will have to be copied to comply with the defense’s request to share the evidence against Pierson.

Fresquez said it might take another two weeks for the police department to complete copying all of the documents.

A hearing in the case was originally scheduled for Aug. 18, but Pierson’s attorney, public defender Dale McPheetres, has not had time to review evidence.

The judge scheduled an appearance for Thursday to update the status of the case and review the attorney’s motions.
