Alpenrose Press of Silverthorne is celebrating 25 years of publishing books on Colorado history, hiking and the outdoors.

The company began with Mary Ellen Gilliland’s “SUMMIT, A Gold Rush History of Summit County, Colorado” in 1980. The lively book full of local history met with much success and has gone to reprint several times. Tens of thousands of copies have been sold.

Gilliland’s “The Summit Hiker” followed in 1983 and now, in its seventh revised edition, ranks as the area’s best-selling book in several local stores. The historic hiking guide undergoes major revision every few years, with trails and access points added and deleted as necessary.

Gilliland’s “The Vail Hiker,” a companion to “The Summit Hiker,” appeared in 1988. The title outsold every Vail Valley book.Gilliland has authored other history books concentrating on the local mining past and is considered the area’s unofficial historical author.

The full project is expected to cost about $165,000. All donations made in 2023 will go directly toward this project.
