PARK COUNTY – A South Park Ambulance District ambulance was struck by a sport utility vehicle at the scene of an automobile accident about 15 miles south of Fairplay on Sunday, according to a press release from the district.

Two paramedics and the family member of a patient who was in the ambulance were injured; the patient, who was secured to a cot, did not sustain further injuries. The two occupants of the SUV were also injured.

One paramedic was flown to St Anthony Central Hospital in Denver and the rest of the injured parties were driven to St. Anthony Summit Medical Center in Frisco, according to the press release.

The incident occurred on U.S. 285 at mile marker 175. The ambulance was parked and facing southbound on the northbound shoulder with warning lights on. An EMS command unit, a Colorado State Patrol unit, a fire engine from Northwest Fire and a Park County Sheriff’s deputy unity were also on scene.

Though the highway was icy in spots, it was a sunny day and the scene was visible for about a mile north and south. Northbound traffic was stopped.

The SUV was traveling at about 65 mph in the southbound lane when it began an uncontrolled slide into the northbound lane and the ambulance, according to the press release.
