Amid anti-doping backlash, Colorado Classic parts ways with Lance Armstrong

The Colorado Classic is ending a partnership with Lance Armstrong and his popular cycling podcast, Stages, after U.S. anti-doping officials raised concerns about his ties to the race.

On Aug. 2, the Colorado Classic told fans that Armstrong would record live from each stage of the brand-new, circuit-style race, including Stage 2 in Breckenridge on Aug. 11. By Aug. 4, the United States Anti-Doping Administration questioned if the arrangement would violate the disgraced Tour de France champion’s ban from the sport.

On Aug. 8, two days before the opening stage in Colorado Springs, race organizers released a brief statement to officially end its marketing partnership with Armstrong and Stages.

“In light of concerns expressed by USADA, we came to a mutual agreement that it is in the best interest of the Colorado Classic to cancel the marketing partnership with the Stages podcast,” officials said in the statement.

As reported by CyclingNews.com, the decision won’t keep Armstrong away from the Colorado Classic. He plans to “go live every day” after each stage of the race, according to a Twitter post, from the Infinite Chimp winery in the RiNo district, home to the final two stages of the race on Aug. 12-13.
