Another letter to Bush

In response to Keith Bond’s letter (SDN Nov. 8), who wrote an open letter to Mr. Bush, I would like to add my thoughts.Dear Mr. Bush:At the heart of the Christian faith tradition are the qualities of compassion, humility and mercy. These values are espoused by the major world religions, as well as by those who espouse no faith. Although I share your faith tradition, I resent how it has been so skillfully co-opted in the service of a belief that you are somehow more “moral” than Sen. Kerry. In addition, I resent how the Christian faith has been represented as being obsessed with personal medical decisions, unclaimed bits of tissue and affectional preferences. There is a dangerous mythology growing up around you which needs to be quickly dispelled. You are not divinely appointed, nor are you uniquely qualified to discern the “Will of God.” Such mythology, if allowed to grow, will lead to hubris, not humility – a quality, you will recall, that Jesus of Nazareth highly recommended. Instead of assuming God is on our side, we should worry if we are on God’s.
