Apology issued to visitors who have been made the butt of locals’ ill-thought humor

This letter is an apology to all of our out-of-state visitors who have had a bad experience with the so-called Summit County locals.

It seems to be the in-thing to make fun of tourists. I have noticed this attitude more with the newer locals whose largest accomplishment in life has been to move here, although it can certainly happen to any of us.

I have lived in Summit County for 17 years and in resort towns my entire adult life. I love resort towns because meeting people on vacation who are so excited to be here energizes me. I feel like I’m on vacation and appreciate even more where I live.

I believe a majority of locals treat you with kindness and respect, not because of the money you spend, but just because you are fellow human beings.

We all want to be treated that way, regardless of where we are. When a local makes that extra effort to help out a visitor or give him/her the “inside scoop,” it’s a good feeling for both.

My favorite vacation spot is Texas. I have spent a couple months a year for the last nine years wind surfing at South Padre Island.

The majority of locals there have been so hospitable that I feel like I’m visiting a second family each year. Some of the locals here could take lessons on the truly laid-back resort lifestyle from those islanders.

To locals: If you’re stressed about slow traffic, you’re overlooking one of the reasons you moved here. We all wanted to escape the rat race and enjoy the luxury of time. Use that time to be thankful you live here, enjoy the awesome scenery and feel empathy toward everyone else who has to drive back to the city life on Sunday afternoon.
