Appalled skiers to buy ski passes somewhere else

I was appalled when I read your article on the advertisement that the Breckenridge Ski Resort is proposing to put into those magazines that are directed toward the 13- to 18-year-old youth.

My understanding has been that the ski area was trying to encourage the destination skier back to Breckenridge. My recollection of the history of the 1960s and “70s indicates that the opposite will be the case. This form of advertising will draw a group of teen-agers who will buy their Buddy Passes, come up here from the Front Range, never spend a dime in the town and leave.

Or even worse, they may stay and illegally go to the bars, which this advertisement encourages, spend a minimum and eventually trash the town. I cannot imagine that the destination skiers that we encourage to come will tolerate this for long and will take their business somewhere else.

Over the last few days, I have talked to local families and others who are younger than I am, and, without exception, they oppose this advertisement. Most have said that they will not purchase a season pass this year from Vail Resorts and will take their business elsewhere.

Being a Colorado skier for over 40 years and currently a resident of Breckenridge and also loving to ski with my friends at Breckenridge – unless this disgusting advertisement is canceled, I will have no alternative but to take my business elsewhere and purchase my annual ski pass at other areas in and around Summit County.
