BRECKENRIDGE – The local man found dead in his home after a standoff with police on Friday has been identified as Michael McIntyre, 50.

The six-hour standoff ended with a gunshot from inside the house at about 1 a.m. after the man, alone in his home after a domestic dispute with his wife, refused to exit.

“It’s a very sad situation,” Breckenridge assistant police chief Greg Morrison said Tuesday.

Asked why the standoff – which included attempts by the Summit County Combined SWAT Team to negotiate – was allowed to last so long, he said the intention was to “de-escalate” the situation.

“We would’ve waited a lot longer, actually,” Morrison said. “Rather than endanger him or officers by going in, experiences show it’s much safer to wait.”

The incident began Friday at 6:18 p.m. when the police received a complaint of domestic violence from McIntyre’s wife, who had fled their home at 247 Locals Lane in Vista Point neighborhood.

When officers arrived at the home, the suspect inside “yelled through a window for officers to go away,” according to a Breckenridge Police press release.

Officers were unable to make additional contact with him after that. Another man ran out of the home and told officers he had been threatened with the 9mm Ruger the suspect was holding.

A remote-controlled camera found McIntyre dead in the kitchen before officers and a medic entered the home.

The Summit County Coroner’s office is investigating the exact cause of death.
