Approve the Union Creek gondola in the Copper development plan

Summit House - Copper Mountain

As a new part-time resident of Copper Mountain, I would like to voice my support for building the Union Creek gondola as part of Intrawest’s Comprehensive Development Strategy (CDS) currently under review by the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC).

The CDS is a plan to build out Copper Mountain.

Every new development project has some negative impact to existing residents.

Roads are widened encroaching on green space and buffer zones, tall buildings are erected restricting views, density is increased impacting traffic – just to name a few.

If every negative impact stopped development, no new development would occur. In some instances the negative impacts offset any real value gained in development, and the development is not warranted. This is not the case for the Union Creek gondola.

While a few homeowners will have their views somewhat impacted by a gondola outside their building, the vast majority of owners and visitors will benefit from its approval and construction.

Construction of the Union Creek gondola will reduce bus traffic within the village while providing convenient and easy access between the New Village and the Union Creek area, making the resort a more attractive destination for any skiing family.

The Union Creek gondola is a clear case of significant benefit to almost all and slight impact to a few, and, as such, deserves BOCC approval and inclusion in the CDS when finally approved.
