April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

Daily News staff reports

Child abuse and neglect are a local and national issue and touch the lives of many children of every ethnicity and economic background. Many individuals think that this problem does not occur in their community but, unfortunately, it does.

Court Appointed Special Advocates(CASA) of the Continental Divide is your local organization which addresses this issue. CASA Volunteers serve Clear Creek, Eagle, Lake and Summit counties. We are part of the National CASA which has many thousands of volunteers throughout the country. CASA trained volunteers are judge appointed and have three main responsibilities: they are fact finders and research cases; speak on behalf of the child representing their best interest; and seek to ensure that the child has a safe and permanent home as quickly as possible.

This sounds like a big responsibility and you may wonder: How can I help? Being a CASA volunteer requires time, a caring attitude, and a willingness to speak up for a child. If this sounds right for you, we urge you to get involved. If your response is that you cannot do this, there are still other ways you can help.

We are sponsoring our 3rd Annual CASA Golf Tournament at Beaver Creek on May 20 and are seeking golfers, sponsors, donors and volunteers. In November we hold our other major fundraiser, a Gingerbread House Competition, also at Beaver Creek.

If you are interested, call Kathy Reed or Colleen Bergman at the CASA office in Dillon at (970) 513-9390. If you can make a monetary donation to support this mission, please send it to: CASA, PO Box 2092, Dillon, CO 80435.
