Army backing off on Pinon Canyon expansion

FORT CARSON ” The Army says it is backing off for now on plans to expand its Pinon Canyon maneuver area, a plan hotly contested by farmers and ranchers and questioned by members of the state’s congressional delegation.

“You’re not going to see the Army for a long time ” if at all,” said Assistant Army Secretary Keith Easton.

He says the Army would look elsewhere.

The Army had already reduced its plan from nearly 1 million acres to 418,000 to 100,000.

Eastin said the Army couldn’t afford to buy the land.

For now it is looking at Fort Polk, La.
