Army recruiter arrested over sexual assault allegation

FORT MORGAN – An Army recruiter was jailed Tuesday after a potential enlistee accused him of sexually assaulting her at home.Sgt. Louis Chapa, 27, was arrested Feb. 14 and was being held in the Morgan County jail on $150,000 bond on a count of first-degree sexual assault.Chapa has been in the Army for three years and has been assigned to the Greeley and Evans recruiting offices for the past six months, with no problems reported, said Maj. Charles Mocilac with the Army Recruiting Battalion in Denver.He has been suspended from recruiting duties, Mocilac said. If Chapa is released on bond, he would be reassigned to an administrative office, he said.A woman in her 20s told the battalion Feb. 5 that she was assaulted two days earlier. Mocilac said Army officials had her report the allegations to sheriff’s officials, who have jurisdiction over crimes on civilian property.The woman’s family reported the case to sheriff’s officials Feb. 14, Sheriff Jim Crone said.The Army and sheriff’s officials were investigating.Chapa was due in court March 14.
