Anyes Adamspresident, Summit County Arts Council

I want to thank Julie Sutor for her Jan. 29 article about the involvement of the Summit High School math class in the Snowflake Championship, where students create snow sculptures, made possible by the Summit County Arts Council (SCAC). We join the Summit Daily News in applauding math teacher Angelia Rosende for using our resources to enhance her honors program and challenge her students. Each year, the high school students have shown remarkable improvements in their snow sculpture skills. Your article also showed the high level of the high school math program, which never gets as much press as all the athletic departments. A highly creative mind can express itself both with abstract formulas and artistically. Also, the participation of most of the county’s elementary schools in the Snowflake Championship showed that a new generation of snow sculptors is already in the making. Beyond this championship, the SCAC also invites students and others to create art with materials and guidance available at our Breckenridge gallery, Arts Alive!.The Snowflake Championship is a part of the SCAC program “Focus on the Child,” funded by a grant from The Summit Foundation to enhance art education in Summit schools. This event would not exist without the energetic dedication of Jan McKim, Cecelia Eidemiller, Bob Hoppin and the participating teachers. Thank you again for your coverage the SCAC and our commitment to the schools.
