DR. KAREN-JO DOLAMORE
special to the daily

Dear Dr Dolamore, my dearest friend and companion died recently leaving me feeling a sense of loss I could not have imagined was possible. Buddy was a beautiful, smart golden retriever. Because I am elderly, I do not wish to have another dog, but I am interested in getting involved in my community in such a way that I can help people and pets. Can you suggest some ways in which I may be of service?

You can make a difference in the lives of animals by volunteering time and knowledge to organizations that need your help. There are a few organizations I know about and I invite individuals to e mail me with others.

For example, L.A P.S ., which is the League for Animals and People of the Summit, is a nonprofit organization that raises funds for programs that help people pay to spay or neuter their pets, and provide financial aid to pet owners who need assistance with paying medical bills for a sick pet. They need people to serve as board members, as well as organizers for special events and fundraisers.

In addition, the Summit County Animal Shelter located in Frisco has a volunteer program for people both young and old. They need volunteers to walk dogs, and to play with the cats. This is a great way to give homeless animals the love and affection they deserve. Few things in life are more fulfilling than comforting an animal in need. On the helping people side you would be making some two-legged friends by working with people who have similar interests. And who knows, you may reconsider and find an older dog who is just as worried about forming a new bond as you are. You might even get more out of it than you expect!
