Asset Builder of the Month
I would like to nominate the Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center (BOEC) for this month’s Asset Builder. The BOEC is well known in Summit County for many reasons. Its professional and knowledgeable staff does wonderful work with all types of client populations, ranging from corporate groups to physically challenged individuals. Staff and interns work tirelessly teaching people to optimize their potential, invite personal challenge and face the reality of diversity. They do all this in our natural environment here in the mountains.I was recently part of a wonderful five-day wilderness trip deep in the Gore Range with four children and their mentors, hosted by the BOEC. Our staff, Bob Bond, Bob Gregory and Bill Milliken, led these four children and I on a journey we will never forget. The children had two days completely on their own with the staff, before they met with their mentors for the remaining three days. During that time, the staff was supportive, informative, empowering and challenging. The children were learning as much about their own capabilities and gifts as they were about the natural beauty all around them.Upon meeting with the mentors, our trip only got better. The BOEC staff focused on the importance of friendship and the responsibilities that lie therein. They also encouraged the children to use their learned capabilities to lead the rest of the group for the final two days.I was awestruck by the environment that the BOEC staff provided for our mentors and mentees to learn about themselves, their relationship to each other and the natural world. Those children grew over our five days together, and you could see it in their eyes. We are lucky to have such a resource here in our community. They continually prove to us here at Mountain Mentors that they are one of our greatest assets.- Nominated by Jake Quigley, director of Summit Mountain MentorsTo nominate a person for Asset Builder of the Month, contact:Asset Builders of the SummitP.O.
