The Summit County Water Rescue team recovered the body of 47-year-old R.T. Gonsoir of Eagle County on Monday after he apparently drowned while trying to assist his daughter on Wolford Mountain Reservoir.

Missing since July 31, Gonsoir reportedly dove from his motor boat into 15-20 feet of water at the north end of the reservoir to reach his 9-year-old daughter who was swimming.

He thought his daughter was in distress, according to Grand County Sheriff Rod Johnson.

Nearby boaters rescued the daughter, but Gonsoir was not seen again, Johnson said.

Surface water temperatures that day were at about 71 degrees.

Kremmling Fire was first to the scene at around 3:45 p.m., followed by the Summit County Water Rescue Team that evening. The search with sonar equipment continued into Sunday with assistance from the East Grand Fire District.

On Monday, Colorado State Park personnel began their search with a more sophisticated side-scan Sonar unit, according to Johnson. Rescuers were searching in water with limited visibility.

The father had been camping at Wolford with his girlfriend and two daughters.

Wolford Mountain Reservoir staff also assisted in the search, according to Johnson.
