Avalanche course offered for women

DAILY NEWS STAFF REPORT

Now is the perfect time to brush up on avalanche awareness skills and increase confidence traveling outside ski area boundaries. Don’t miss this early season opportunity on Jan. 2 when Babes in the Backcountry and the San Juan Outdoor School join up in Telluride for a women’s only Avalanche I Refresher Clinic. This one-day clinic taught by professional female staff from the San Juan Outdoor School and Babes in the Backcountry is designed for women in all snow sports disciplines who have taken the Avalanche Level 1 course and are looking to become more confident and comfortable traveling in the backcountry. The all-female learning environment provides education in a nonthreatening, hands-on, relaxed atmosphere where questions are always welcomed and encouraged. The workshop will include an avalanche awareness review, beacon and rescue techniques, terrain analysis and snow stability evaluation. The morning is spent in a classroom environment and the rest of the day on a tour in the Lizard Head Pass backcountry. However, for those just beginning to discover winter backcountry travel, Babes in the Backcountry and San Juan Outdoor School have two more courses that may better suit a beginner’s skill level. On Feb. 13 there will be a Backcountry Basics clinic designed as an introductory to traveling safely in the backcountry. The Avalanche I Refresher Clinic costs $95 and includes a full day of professional instruction, snacks, take home materials, raffle prizes and a Babes goodie bag. Demo gear is available from Scarpa, Black Diamond, Backcountry Access and Patagonia. To secure a spot for this course and for more information, call Nicole at San Juan Outdoor School, or visit http://www.tellurideadventures.com and http://www.babesinthebackcountry.com.
