Avalanche snags 10 vehicles on Berthoud Pass, causing lengthy closure
An avalanche on Berthoud Pass hit 10 vehicles Sunday around 11:30 a.m. on U.S. Highway 40, causing a lengthy closure.
No injuries were reported, and all vehicles were safely pulled from the slide,” according to a Colorado Department of Transportation news release.
As of 6:45 p.m. Sunday, the highway remained closed, and officials said there was no estimate for when it will reopen.
CDOT said around 4:30 p.m. Sunday that natural avalanches were still occurring in the area.
The closure spans Mary Jane Ski Area and Henderson Mine Road in Winter Park, from milepost 234.5 to milepost 243.
The avalanche comes after meteorologists warned of “difficult to impossible” travel over Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend as multiple snowstorms threatened to dump feet of snow and cause white-out conditions across much of Colorado.
The Grand County Sheriff’s Department reported multiple vehicles Sunday due to the icy and snowy conditions.
