Back page: Grand Rapids can’t quite top rubber-chicken record

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — There were a lot of laughs — but not enough chickens.

Hundreds of people threw a rubber chicken Thursday outside city hall in Grand Rapids, but organizers didn’t get enough to set a record.

The event was part of Gilda’s LaughFest, a 10-day festival of comedy to raise money for families dealing with cancer. It’s named for late comedian Gilda Radner.

Organizers say 738 rubber chickens were thrown in a huge ring, short of the 999 tossed at a church in Burlington, Ontario, Canada in 2011. Grand Rapids had the record for a few months that year when 925 people threw rubber chickens.

Wendy Wigger, president of Gilda’s LaughFest, says: “We always have serious fun.”
