Backstage holding auditions for ‘Beauty and the Beast’
The Backstage Theatre in Breckenridge is casting ages 5 and up for its Labor Day production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Auditions will be held in Breckenridge on Sunday, April 25.
With music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, and book by Linda Woolverton, this is the modern classic Disney film realized in an exciting stage version.
In a French provincial town, beautiful Belle lives with her father a dotty inventor. When her father fails to return from a trip to the local fair, Belle rushes off to find him. To her dismay, she discovers he is being held captive in an enchanted castle by a horrible beast. She trades her freedom for his, and the “tale as old as time” begins. How Belle tames the unfortunate Beast and his redemption and ultimate transformation into a handsome prince continues to enthrall audiences of all ages.
The production is directed by Christopher Willard. Musical direction is by Mary Gottlieb. Choreography is by Kathy Kautz.
This is the same production team who created the 2008 Town Hall Arts Center production which broke box-office records for holiday show attendance. This production also boasts orchestrations by Donna Debreceni, costume design by Jim Miller and set design by Greg Loftus.
The show will premiere on Labor Day weekend and perform Sept. 3-6 at the Riverwalk Center in Breckenridge. Rehearsals are scheduled for weekends in August. Proceeds from the production will help to fund arts scholarships for Summit County youth.
Auditions will be held on Sunday, April 25, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Breckenridge Theatre, located at 121 S. Ridge St. in Breckenridge. Children will be seen from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m, and adults may audition from 2-5 p.m. Be prepared to sing a chorus from “Be Our Guest,” “Human Again,” and “Beauty and the Beast.” Wear comfortable clothing and be prepared to learn a short dance combination from the show. Be prepared for optional cold readings from the script upon request. If you have a headshot and resume, please bring those to the audition.
Auditions are by appointment only, so call (970) 453-0199 to reserve a spot. There are roles for actors, singers, dancers, and non-singers in the production. We are especially looking to cast young men ages 12 and up who can move well and would play wolves and castle creatures. Families are encouraged to audition. All positions are available.
