Backstage makes Zorba proud with food – and merriment

BRECKENRIDGE – Zorba’s words about simplifying and living freely aren’t the only piece of advice the Backstage Theatre took to heart (see related story, page B6). The artsy crew is following in Zorba’s footsteps by living life to the fullest with food, drink and merriment at the sixth annual My Dinner with the Backstage.

The evening features a four-course gourmet dinner at Hearthstone Casual Dining in Breckenridge and includes hors d’oeuvres and the finest wines paired with each course. Chefs from the Hearthstone cleverly create their menu based on the Backstage’s latest productions. In the past, guests have enjoyed the Harry and Salmon Dialogues (based on “The Harry and Sam Dialogues”) and Black Angus of God (based on “Agnes of God”).

Backstage actors dress in their costumes from the past season to entertain and mingle with guests. Kelly Renoux (from “Tell Me on a Sunday”), Skip Wee (from “Wit” and “Zorba”), Misty Rogers (from “Wit”) and Dee Dice (from “Incorruptible”) will help host the evening.

“They do their best to help the Hearthstone staff out, but mostly they just get in their way,” said artistic director Jeremy Cole jokingly. “They try not to break things – just pour water and stuff.”

A silent auction offers more than 100 items including a trip to Key West, a snowboard, restaurant gift certificates, topsoil or gravel, theater tickets, lodging, golf outings and lift tickets.

In true theatrical form, the Backstage’s goal is to outdo each previous year’s event with its entertainment and silent auction.

Cole plans on announcing not only this summer’s theatrical lineup, but also the four shows scheduled for the fall and winter.

My Dinner with the Backstage entertains guests from 6-10 p.m. Thursday, April 24. Tickets are $80 and may be purchased by calling (970) 453-0199. All proceeds benefit the Backstage Theatre and finance its scholarship program, which helps fourth- to 12th-graders study music, dance, art and theater outside of the school system. This year, the program has 13 applicants.
