Banyan jams at Goat Thursday

KEYSTONE ” Stephen Perkins, leader of the band Banyan, describes himself and band members as being on an “instrumental chase” while in this musical form.
Perkins, also drummer for Jane’s Addiction and Porno for Pyros, came up with the side project more than 10 years ago as a way to get more live shows in.
It started off with fellow Porno for Pyros member Mike Watt, and has since then, been what Perkins calls “a morphing machine.”
Banyan’s second album, “Anytime At All” featured 30 different musicians, including trumpet player Willie Waldman, who along with Perkins, are the only consistent members of the band.
Speaking on Waldman’s influence, Perkins said, “I’ve always loved great music with horn arrangements. I never had that in Jane’s Addiction or Pyro ” they’re both guitar driven.”
Perkins, who will be performing at the Goat on Thursday with Waldman, and guitarist Brian Jordan from Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, said he also gets a chance to say more in the instrumental Banyan.
“If you have a singer, you should read the lyrics and know them and connect with them so you can do a good musical part,” Perkins said. “And in the same exact sense, without lyrics and without a voice, you all have a chance to say something.”
He said Banyan absorbs their environment, the day they had, along with the vibe from the audience to create each night’s set of music.
Perkins said he’s interested in putting together another album.
“CDs aren’t selling really well … but the point is getting together with musicians making music,” he said.
