Bar wrestling tournaments canceled after uproar

FORT COLLINS A series of gelatin-wrestling tournaments that included free drinks for some patrons was halted after harsh criticism from the parents of a Colorado State University student who died from alcohol poisoning.The promoter and the manager of the restaurant-bar where Wrestle-O was taking place canceled the last two tournaments on Monday after Ricky and Patty Spady of Beatrice, Neb., called the promotion an abhorrent attempt to exploit the death of their daughter, Samantha.Promoter Brian Collins had said he planned to donate at least $100 to a foundation created in memory Samantha Spady, 19, who died Sept. 6.Collins apologized to the Spadys and the foundation. There were no negative intentions, he said.Jay Feinberg, manager of the Fort Collins C.B. & Potts, also apologized to the Spady family. He said the business had not sponsored Wrestle-O, only rented space to Collins.Fliers distributed on the CSU campus had promised a free drink to the first 100 women to arrive at the Wrestle-O events.The SAM Spady Foundation promotes alcohol awareness. SAM stands for student alcohol management and was Samantha Spadys nickname.Investigators said she had consumed at least 30 drinks in 11 hours. After her death, CSU formed a task force to examine solutions to binge drinking.Alcohol was a factor in the deaths of at least four university students in Colorado this fall.
