Barbara Miller: Take a chance with Obama

In response to Ms. Sheets’ Letter to the Editor, September 19 regarding Sen. Barack Obama’s experience.

After eight years of the “experienced” governor we’ve had as president I’m willing to take a chance on change. Look at Sen. McCain who pushes aside his integrity to say and do anything he has to while he sees his last best hope of ever becoming president slip away. That’s not change, that’s more of the same.

Abraham Lincoln, who is usually at the top of every list of great presidents, was the only president with no experience as a governor, senator, cabinet member, general or vice president ” none. Yet Republicans fall all over themselves dropping his name and praising his greatness, and he was a great president.

Prior to becoming president, though, Lincoln’s experience in public office consisted of one term in the U.S. House, several terms in the Illinois Legislature and a brief tenure as postmaster of New Salem, Ill. He was also an unsuccessful merchant, twice an unsuccessful candidate for the U.S. Senate, but he was a successful lawyer. Need I say more?

Come on people, it’s time to roll the dice again and take a chance on a person of real change who could very well be another great president, and wouldn’t Lincoln smile?
