Baxter Pharr: Setting the record straight

In Maggie Postlethwaite’s recent letter to the editor, she points out that Sen. Obama voted three times as an Illinois State Senator against a bill protecting babies born alive during an abortion. On the surface, this makes Sen. Obama seem like some kind of monster who would not provide life-saving care for these infants.

In response to these attacks, Obama addressed these votes in the last debate. He stated that the reason he voted against these bills was because there was a law already on the books requiring doctors to provide medical care for these infants. In addition, the Hippocratic Oath would require physicians to intervene in such a situation. The reason he voted against these bills was that they significantly weakened the statutes in Roe v. Wade by restricting abortion even in cases of incest, rape, and when the mother’s life was at risk. Hopefully this sheds some light on this subject.
