Bear alert: Breckenridge cracks down on trash cans

According to a new trash ordinance enacted in Breckenridge, homeowners and businesses using curbside trash pickup must store all garbage cans inside a home, garage or building – unless the can has a latching mechanism to hold the lid securely to the can. The town is enacting these laws to help control the access to garbage by wildlife.

The new ordinance also states that garbage cannot be overflowing from the top of the receptacle, not allowing the lid to be closed and secured. It also specifies all garbage must be contained in a trash receptacle; plastic garbage bags are not allowed to sit at curbside. Recyclable materials that do not contain any food matter may be placed in recycle bins and placed curbside. In addition, garbage cans can only be placed at curbside after 6 a.m. on the day of pickup and must be removed from the curb by 10 p.m. that same day.

For more information on this ordinance, visit the Town of Breckenridge website at and view the Town Code. The Garbage and Refuse section is in Title 5, Section 2.
