Berry: ‘War on women’
September 14, 2012
Recently I’ve been seeing ads on behalf of President Obama regarding their “war on women” and how the Republicans are trying to take women back 50 years.
I think there may be some confusion on who is really waging the “war on women.” Do you remember last year when Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius floated the idea that women did not need mammograms until the age of 50 and that pap smears were no longer needed annually as a necessary preventative measure? Don’t know about you but I remember the firestorm from physicians across the country regarding this suggestion.
Well now Obamacare is law and guess what – no mammograms until 50 and pap smears every 5 years! According to the American Cancer Society, in 2011 there were 231,000 cases nationally of invasive breast cancer and of those 51,000 were under the age of 50. With simple math it looks like of those diagnosed, about one in four of them could be your spouses, mothers, sisters, aunts, daughters and granddaughters who are under the age of 50. They would contract invasive breast cancer and never know it until it is too late, and it would be due to the fact that Obamacare has denied them this preventative procedure that is wholly endorsed by physicians across the country. Excluding cancers of the skin, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, accounting for nearly 1 in 3 cancers diagnosed in US women.
As stated in the American Cancer Society brochure: “The seriousness of invasive breast cancer is strongly influenced by the stage of the disease; that is, the extent or spread of the cancer when it is first diagnosed.”
The”war on women” is the product of this current administration!
