Better forest funding priority needed

Summit County National Forests, and indeed, most Colorado National Forests deserve increased insect infestation mitigation assistance from Congress, but not at the expense of our most important environmental regulations and forest protections.

The “Healthy Forest Restoration Act,” that is being considered by the U.S. Senate would gut the National Environmental Protection Act and would not provide sufficient funding for wildfire and insect infestation protection around communities.

Studies have shown that insect infestations are, in fact, worst immediately surrounding communities. Funding should be prioritized to create defensible spaces in the community protection zone where outbreaks pose immediate risks to communities.

Residents of Summit County should be vocal that funding be prioritized for the area within a half mile of their homes.
