Betty Sarber: Support for Breckenridge solar panels

I support the Town’s decision to pursue moving Breckenridge’s power consumption to renewable energy sources. The planned solar panel installation at the golf course and Riverwalk Center are good choices, both for our tourism economy and our tax dollars. The town will be able to reduce their operating costs while reducing their environmental impact.

Breckenridge has a unique character, and I am all for preserving our Victorian character – but not at all costs. The historic part of Breckenridge is preserved by this solar panel installation as we are talking about solar panel installations at the golf course and facing Park Avenue, both locations of which are hardly Victorian nor historical. Would we support the idea of not removing the unsafe electricity wiring in some of our historical properties simply because the wire itself is historical?

Many tourists will choose a “green” ski town over a ski town without a plan to reduce its carbon footprint, just as many home buyers are looking to buy “green” properties. Although some might argue that solar panels are ugly, for me, they represent a visual that demonstrates commitment to sound environmental stewardship and even possess an industrial beauty all of their own. One could argue that the sight of a ski lift going up the side of mountain destroys the pristine nature of the mountainside vista.

I understand some of the concerns that have been expressed by others and I can empathize with their concerns. Transitions are disruptive. Please come to the town council meeting Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. to express your support for our town’s astute and courageous decision to promote saving money while increasing our movement toward “green.”
