Beware of Summit’s bar scene

Last weekend my friend Mike came to town, and we decided to brave the Summit County bar scene. After producing my three forms of identification to gain entry, Mike and I quickly realized that the guy-to-girl ratio is about 70 to 30 percent (and I’m being generous).

With a little liquid courage, Mike and I approached two young ladies and started a conversation. However, our simple two-girl, two-guy exchange turned into a seven-guy, two-girl party in no more than two minutes. Since we were the “freshies” (we’d both just recently turned 21) wearing the button down shirts (note to self: Proper bar attire here is apparently a hooded sweatshirt), we figured we were out of the game and retired to our bar stools. Are bars good places to meet people? Nobody really acts themselves, and most bar environments are somewhat contrived. Part of me hopes I will meet some real chums and perhaps the love of my life at the bar, but part of me knows this probably isn’t true.

These are the thoughts that ran through my head as I prepared to order another drink. According to Sosuave.com, women are more apt to start a long-term relationship with a man who drinks cocktails rather than beer. So it must be my fear of commitment that drives me to beer.

I’m unsure as to whether I’ll revisit the bar scene, mostly because I don’t have the time or money, but partly because I just don’t like it that much, and Mike went back to Loveland. Austin Diaz can be contacted at (970) 668-3998 ext. 251, or at adiaz@summitdaily.com.
