Beware of toxic waste

Rob CallawayBreckenridge

Hello French Gulch, want to be a toxic dump? That is what the EPA, Forest Service and even town officials are contemplating. Suddenly, the EPA is eager to address the high levels of poisons in and around the Wellington/Oro mine. To address this, they propose hauling 6,000-10,000 cubic yards of poison laden soils through your neighborhoods to “consolidate and cap”. We are told “the removal of the waste action will decrease threats to human health and the environment from high concentrations of lead and arsenic.” I for one would be eager to hear the EPA, Forest Service, town and county officials explain that to the families who live downstream from the proposed site, to the parents who drop off their kids at Little Red, and to the multitudes of people who visit the Gulch everyday.
