"Big Mark," the bus driver, no longer transporting children

James Dossett - Dillon Valley Elementary School

Summit County, I want to let you know that Summit County Schools and its children lost a great friend and a great bus driver in Mark Faust.

Mark passed away at his home in Leadville a few days before school started.

I had the pleasure of having Mark drive my bus while I coached the eighth-grade interscholastic basketball team at the middle school three years ago.

We traveled for 16 weeks every Sunday to many locations up and down the Front Range.

On one occasion, the weather was very severe and the interstate was a mess. Mark maneuvered the bus on side roads and two-lane access roads to get us back to Summit County safely.

On that same occasion, my family followed the bus in my personal vehicle because of the weather and Mark was truly amazing in his abilities.

Whenever Mark would drive for field trips at my elementary school, he would always stop in, say “hi” and give me a hug.

The kids enjoyed their rides with “Big Mark” and they always arrived home with little incidence.

I wanted people to hear about the good things Mark did for the school district and their children. I know that “Big Mark” is in heaven and I also know he is doing what he loved best, taking care of his cats, cooking and driving a bus full of happy kids.

We will sure miss you and we love you, “Big Mark.”
