Q. What type of business do you operate ” what do you sell, or what service do you provide?

A. We perform a comprehensive home inventory for clients to use in case of an insurance claim or for estate planning purposes. Inventory includes a DVD video of their entire property, inside and out. Also, “still” photos are taken of valuables, furnishings and collections. Finally, if the client gives information about the cost and current value of each item, this information is entered into a secure database. We then compile the data into an easy-to-navigate portfolio of printed documents as well as CD and DVD format. All are on non-rewritable disks to prevent accidental erasure and the integrity of the documentation. We also upload this data into a password protected secure server, located offsite and backed up nightly.

Q. Where are you from, and why did you decide to open your business in Summit County?

A. Sally is a fourth-generation native of Colorado and Ellen has lived in Summit County for over 10 years. There is a great need for this service in Summit County because, currently, no one else offers it. Property managers, insurance agents and attorneys all agree that everyone should have a comprehensive list of their valuables, yet fewer than 20 percent even have the most basic inventory. Most are extremely uninsured and, if a claim is filed, have no real way to prove ownership. Having an unbiased, third-party document their property adds credibility to any claims or estate plan.

Q. What experience do you have in this field?

A. Sally started in Summit County in 1995 as a design consultant at Kacey’s. After being recruited by a financial services firm in 1999, she now has extensive experience in financial and estate planning. Ellen practiced as an interior designer for 10 years, owning her own business. Having a good partnership is key. Both have been good friends for over 10 years and have extensive experience in owning and operating a service-oriented business.

Q. What sets your business apart from other similar businesses?

A. There are home inspection businesses, but to our knowledge there aren’t any other companies offering home and property inventory. It requires a great attention to detail as well as basic estate planning knowledge. We are also licensed, bonded and insured. Having a good working knowledge about home furnishings also helps us to advise clients about whether or not they should acquire an appraisal on certain items.

Q. What types of customers do you hope to reach in Summit County?

A. Any homeowner or renter who has personal property, particularly those with collections and those who may be in the path of possible flooding ” as in 1995 ” or fire.

Q. What are your plans for your company’s future?

A. Networking with insurance agents and Realtors as well as those who offer services such as housekeeping or home inspection, is a priority. (We offer an attractive wholesale rate to those businesses.) Eventually, we would like to have branch offices along the Front Range and other major markets and possibly create franchise opportunities. We recently became an S corporation.
