Blake declares for mayor

Daily News staff report

BRECKENRIDGE – Town Councilmember Ernie Blake declared for Breckenridge mayor Friday, starting a formal process that makes him an official candidate.

Blake’s decision comes on the heels of incumbent Mayor Sam Mamula’s announcement he is retiring after one term in office.

“I wanted to wait so there was no awkwardness until Sam made his decision,” Blake said.

Mamula said he needs to step down to spend more time with his wife, Hannelore, who is recovering from back surgery at the couple’s second home in Florida.

Mamula served one four-year term after succeeding 16-year Mayor Steve West.

When candidates start declaring for office, it forces the hands of those who are considering the same but first want to see who is serious about running.
