Board of Ed chairman to speak

SUMMIT COUNTY – State Board of Education chairman Jared Polis will appear at Summit Middle School tonight to discuss education issues facing Colorado and to listen to local concerns.”I make a major effort to visit as many school districts as I can,” Polis said. “The ski counties have a unique set of issues: relatively high property tax bases, high numbers of nonresidents and large immigrant populations. I’m looking forward to learning more about the Summit community.”

Polis was elected to the State Board of Education in 2000. He visits 30-40 school districts statewide each year.Among the topics Polis will discuss are CSAP scores, educating English Language Learners (ELL) and school funding.”I am working on efforts to teach new immigrants English, and I would be happy to share my expertise,” Polis said. “Most immigrants who are 16-21 years old work full-time jobs. Many times districts will need to offer evening and weekend programs so there’s a flexible schedule.

“The second biggest challenge is addressing their needs as English Language Learners before you can get into the content areas,” Polis added.Polis is a businessman and political activist who has founded, funded and run several high-tech start-ups. He served as CEO of Bluemountain.com until its sale in 1999. He also founded Proflowers.com, Dan’s Chocolates and Frogmagic.

He has a degree in political science from Princeton University.Julie Sutor can be reached at (970) 668-3998, ext. 203, or jsutor@summitdaily.com.
