Boats banned at Antero to keep zebra mussels at bay

FAIRPLAY ” Antero Reservoir near Fairplay is temporarily closed to boats while Denver Water comes up with a plan to check for zebra mussels.

The water department plans to meet Monday with state wildlife officials to devise an inspection plan for the mussels, which drive out native species, block industrial pipes and boats’ motors.

Denver Water is also working on inspection procedures at four other dams to prevent the spread of the mussels, discovered in Lake Pueblo in November. It’s the only place the mussels have been found in Colorado so far.

The black-and-white-striped mussels were first discovered in the United States in the Great Lakes in 1988. They spread by attaching to boats and other vessels.
