Bob Cottrell: Sports scholarships idea has merit

I’m not sure why Bryce Evans finds Ralph Nader and his League of Friends’ proposal for taking athletic scholarships out of college sports so preposterous. The Ivy League has been doing it for nearly 60 years, and it boasts many team and individual national championships. Countless numbers of Ivy League alumni have been Olympians and professional athletes and coaches too.

Even as we speak, Yale hockey is ranked first in the nation and prepares to play for a spot in the Frozen Four Saturday night. Perhaps taking athletic scholarships out of college sports, and replacing them with needs-based grants could work quite well throughout the rest of the NCAA.
