BOEC accepting applications for outdoor leadership program for high school students

BRECKENRIDGE – Motivated high school students are invited to apply for participation in Wilderness Outreach, June 8-15, offered by the Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center (BOEC).

Wilderness Outreach provides students the opportunity to expand their leadership ability, practice and gain outdoor education skills and put this knowledge to work on a true BOEC wilderness program, working alongside a professional staff.

The program is open to students entering the second year of high school or higher next fall.

Wilderness Outreach’s first component consists of eight days of experiential training at the campus in Breckenridge and on surrounding Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management lands.

Training will include team-building through initiatives and facilitation; adaptive and dynamic ropes course experiences, canoeing, rock climbing, inclusive camping techniques and a two-day, overnight, river-rafting workshop on the Upper Colorado River.

The program also will include diversity and disability awareness training, as well as adaptive techniques.

The second component is a five-to-seven-day volunteer assignment in which students serve as assistant instructors. They will help lead a BOEC wilderness program with a group of participants with a variety of special needs.

Students will be evaluated upon completion of the program. Partial scholarships might be available for qualified applicants.

For information, contact Cindy Wetherald, outreach coordinator, at (970) 453-6422 or via e-mail at wildprog@boec.org. For more information about the BOEC, point your browser to http://www.boec.org.
