Books: Andrews spins a fun yarn

KIMBERLY NICOLETTIsummit daily news

New York Times bestselling author Andy Andrews knows how to spin a yarn. His latest book, “Return to Sawyerton Springs” brings to life a small town in Alabama, in a personal and satisfying way.Andrews recounts the memorable people, places and events surrounding Sawyerton Springs, the town he grew up in. He took a year to document his experiences in the town, making sure to “leave out the boring parts.”And, as he says in his introduction, he did.”Return to Sawyerton Springs” is a pleasant read, often humorous, often poignant and touching. Andrews’ “characters” leap off the page, heart-touching and authentic. As their stories unfold, it’s as if Andrews has taken us by the hand and led us through his most memorable moments, both as a way of sharing parts of himself and also showing us how to make sense of portions of our life. Take for example Ginny Williams, who couldn’t remember being so mad at her husband, Billy Pat, who proposed 21 years ago. We watch as her mind spirals into exasperation, calling him fatso, and wishing he could hear her thoughts. But, as the narrative progresses, she counts 14 people having affairs on soap operas-at least she doesn’t have to worry about that. As her teenagers come home, she reflects upon what a good father Billy Pat is. By the end of her day, a surprise delivery provides her a dose of reality. After soaking in all of the rich stories, check out the reader’s guide, at the end of the book, “created to facilitate a better understanding of your life by taking a deep breath, relaxing and taking the time to find the humor and meaning in everyday life.” The questions are useful for both group and personal reflection.
