Books: ‘Celebritize Yourself’

These days, books have replaced business cards, at least according to Marsha Friedman, author and CEO of a national public relations firm called EMS Incorporated. She asserts, in her new book, “Celebritize Yourself,” that the sure-fire way to make yourself stand out is by publishing a book.

Reading her book is similar to listening to a life coach cheer you on. She redefines any negative connotations associated with the word “celebrity,” and then encourages readers to step out into the limelight, specifically by writing a book.

She says everyone has a celebrity within them and points out the benefits of presenting oneself as an expert in one’s field. But she also asks a few tough questions aimed at knowing your strengths, weaknesses and exactly why you’d want to become a celebrity – because it requires hard work.

For anyone who knows the basics of book publishing, public relations or both, a couple of her chapters may seem redundant. But her chapter called “The Celebritize Yourself Quiz” brings up important questions, such as your vision, your level of commitment, your unique message, its appeal, your timeline, your support team and your measurement for success. Then she continues to guide readers into finding their media niche and getting in.

The only thing missing in Friedman’s book is support and information about online opportunities. In a world that’s becoming more and more digitized, it seems only natural to talk about websites and search engine optimization, and though she does recommend hiring a web designer and web copy writer, she doesn’t delve into the details of making a strong impact online.
