Borders won’t get extra sign

DILLON – Borders Books won’t get preferential treatment in Dillon.

The big-box chain, which is preparing to open a new store in the Dillon Ridge Marketplace next month, asked Dillon town officials to let it have three signs on its property, though the current planned unit development (PUD) allows for only two signs per lot.

According to the original PUD for the marketplace, “no tenant should be allowed more than two signs … and, in most instances, one sign should be adequate.” Still, the town’s planning commission recommended council members approve the request, allowing Borders to place signs on the store’s east and north sides and along Highway 6, said Theresa Worsham, Dillon development coordinator.

But council members decided against the commission’s recommendation at their meeting Oct. 15, instead agreeing to uphold the original PUD, Worsham said.

Council members “want to have a classy-looking shopping area,” said Dillon Town Manager Jack Benson. “They want to keep it tasteful, and I agree with that. It was a thoughtful decision, and I think they came down on the side of the fence that was equitable to everybody.”

Though Borders representatives could choose to appeal the council’s decision, “the council would have to decide to rescind its current motion, and I don’t have a sense that anyone wants to do that at this point,” he said.
